Why Maintaining Proper pH Levels Is Essential for Pool Water Safety

When it comes to keeping your pool safe, clear, and comfortable, pH balance is the unsung hero. pH measures how acidic or basic your pool water is, with a perfect range sitting between 7.2 and 7.8. Straying outside of this range can quickly lead to problems that affect both your swimmers’ health and the longevity of your pool.

Here’s why pH matters:

Chlorine Effectiveness – Chlorine is the main sanitizer in most pools, but if pH is too high (above 7.8), chlorine becomes up to 80% less effective, allowing bacteria and algae to grow.
Skin and Eye Comfort – Low pH (below 7.2) makes water too acidic, leading to red, irritated eyes and dry, itchy skin. High pH can cause similar discomfort by making the water too basic.
Equipment Protection – Acidic water (low pH) corrodes pool liners, ladders, and metal components. Alkaline water (high pH) leads to calcium scaling on pool surfaces, filters, and pipes, reducing equipment lifespan.

How to test and balance pH:
